As summer winds down and the school year approaches, student-athletes are preparing to step into their dual roles—excelling in both academics and sports. As a seasoned coach, I’ve seen the challenges and triumphs of this transition firsthand. All we have is right now! It’s a crucial time that sets the tone for the rest of the school year, so here are some key strategies to help student-athletes navigate the back-to-school season with confidence and resilience.

1. Time Management is Key

Balancing the demands of school, sports, and personal life can feel overwhelming, especially for student-athletes. Athletes have a full-time job 24/7 365; their job is to prepare for that one moment where they perform. One of the most important skills you can develop is effective time management. Use a planner or app to schedule your classes, practices, games, and study sessions. Prioritize tasks based on deadlines and importance. Most athletes have no say in their practice or academic schedule, but somewhere in their day is a small moment of pause. By creating a daily routine, you’ll have a clearer picture of how to allocate your precious time efficiently.

2. Establish Academic Goals Early

The start of the school year is the perfect time to set academic goals. Whether it’s improving your GPA, excelling in a difficult class, or simply staying on top of your homework, goal-setting helps keep you focused. Reach out to your teachers early and let them know you’re a student-athlete, which can open doors to additional support and understanding during the season. Go to office hours early and really get to know your teachers. As Coach Kev says, “Good grades can cover a multitude of sins.” Start with the end in mind and reverse engineer your course load.

3. Prioritize Recovery and Sleep

With practices, games, and study sessions piling up, many student-athletes sacrifice sleep. However, recovery is just as important as training. Make sure you’re getting at least 8 hours of sleep each night to allow your body and mind to fully recover. Proper rest helps prevent injuries, improves athletic performance, and enhances cognitive function in the classroom. Proper rest and recovery can help us enjoy our sport a bit more without the risk of burnout.

4. Communicate with Coaches and Teachers

One of the biggest challenges student-athletes face is managing conflicts between their academic and athletic schedules. The key here is communication. Be proactive in talking to both your coaches and teachers. If you know you’ll have a big game the night before a major exam, talk to your teacher in advance to work out a plan. Similarly, let your coach know if school commitments are overwhelming so they can help adjust your training schedule when needed. Keep your teammates and social supports in the loop only if they are helpful.

5. Fuel Your Body Right

Your body is your engine, and to perform at your best both on and off the field, you need to fuel it properly. Focus on a diet rich in lean proteins, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Hydration is equally important—always have a water bottle on hand and make sure you’re drinking consistently throughout the day. Proper nutrition not only boosts athletic performance but also enhances focus and energy for school.

6. Mental Health Matters

In the hustle and bustle of the back-to-school season, it’s easy to neglect your mental health. Stress, anxiety, and pressure can quickly build up for student-athletes. Take time for self-care, and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Whether it’s meditation, journaling, or simply spending time with friends, taking care of your mental health is just as important as physical training. There is a time to tough it out, and there is a time to ask for help. Ask for help when you need it.

7. Prepare for the Long Haul

The beginning of the school year may feel like a sprint, but remember—this is a marathon. Consistency is the name of the game. Stay disciplined with your routines, and when obstacles arise, focus on resilience. Every setback is an opportunity to grow, both as a student and as an athlete.
